The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has announced that the Federal Government is prepared to receive Nigerians who may be deported from the United States.
Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Director of Media and Corporate Affairs at the Commission, confirmed in an interview with Vanguard on Tuesday evening that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is overseeing the matter. He further noted that the Federal Government has established an inter-agency committee to address the situation should a large-scale deportation occur.
“The Federal Government has set up a committee, which includes the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NiDCOM, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), to handle any potential mass deportation of Nigerians from the United States,” Balogun explained.
However, the NiDCOM spokesperson clarified that the Commission has not received any official confirmation that Nigerians in the U.S. are currently being processed for deportation.
It is worth noting that approximately 3,690 Nigerians in the United States are reportedly facing deportation as part of the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.
According to a report from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), as seen by our correspondent, the data reveals a breakdown by nationality and the number of individuals facing deportation. As of November 24, 2024, ICE’s non-detained docket includes 1,445,549 non-citizens with final removal orders.
In the report titled Noncitizens on the ICE Non-Detained Docket with Final Orders of Removal by Country of Citizenship, Mexico and El Salvador are the top nations with the highest numbers facing deportation, with 252,044 and 203,822 individuals, respectively.
ICE is tasked with safeguarding the United States from cross-border crime and illegal immigration that pose national security risks.
In related news, last Thursday, a significant number of migrants were detained, while others were flown out of the U.S. on military aircraft as part of the ongoing mass deportation operations promised by the Trump administration.
