FG Partners with GAWAL to Empower 5,000 Women Farmers in Rice Technology

In collaboration with Green Agriculture West Africa Limited (GAWAL), a subsidiary of the Chinese General Construction Company (CGC), the Federal Government is empowering 5,000 women farmers across states with training in modern rice technology and diverse farming practices.

Barrister Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye, the Minister of Women Affairs, highlighted that this initiative is part of the government’s commitment to alleviate poverty through enhanced food sufficiency and economic empowerment at the grassroots level.

Addressing the audience at the graduation ceremony of the two-day “Train the Trainer Rice Cultivation Technology Training Programme” at the Abuja Industrial Park, the minister emphasized the ministry’s adoption of a bottom-top approach in its poverty intervention efforts.

The Chinese company is equipping women with high-yield rice varieties, facilitating direct planting on farmlands. The women receive pumping machines from the ministry to irrigate their farms, allowing them to plant this rice variety four times a year, contributing significantly to food production for Nigerians.

Barrister Kennedy-Ohaneye emphasized transparency in the project, intending to showcase the progress stage by stage, keeping Nigerians informed and inspired about the positive developments.

Highlighting the broader impact, she noted, “Seventy percent of the criminals and insecurity challenges we have are due to poverty as a push factor because of idleness, but this project will create jobs for people to do, and they will make their own money.”

The minister explained that the government is introducing innovation in animal farming, specifically in cow rearing under the program. The aim is to reduce the time it takes for cow rearing from one and a half years to eight months.

Mr. Wang Xiemin, the Managing Director of GAWAL, urged the trained participants to share their knowledge within their communities, emphasizing that their commitment to innovation and sustainable practices would shape the agriculture landscape for generations to come.

One of the beneficiaries from Niger state, Abubakar Fatima-Kure, expressed the immense benefit of the training, providing knowledge on the use of modern farm equipment, various pesticides, and fertilizers. She emphasized the potential for trainers to pass on this knowledge to other women, covering equipment usage, pesticide selection, fertilizer application, and more.

The training covered the latest cultivation technology, spanning from land preparation to seed breeding, fertilizer application, and various agriculture chains.
