Experts Applaud Nigeria’s Innovative Use of HIFU Technology for Fibroid Care

Medical professionals have lauded the introduction of High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) technology for fibroid treatment in Nigeria as a groundbreaking achievement. Deployed by Nordica Fertility Centre, the technology has revolutionized healthcare delivery, positioning Nigeria as a premier destination for quality medical services.

HIFU offers women a non-invasive, pain-free solution for managing fibroids, a common gynecological issue that causes severe pain, heavy bleeding, and infertility. After its successful implementation in Lagos in 2021, Nordica Fertility Centre is now set to launch HIFU in Abuja, as announced during the recent Fibroid Forum in Abuja.

Abayomi Ajayi, the Managing Director and CEO of Nordica, emphasized that HIFU addresses the risks associated with traditional fibroid removal surgeries, thereby reducing the need for medical tourism and creating a new healthcare market in Nigeria. He highlighted that since HIFU’s introduction in China in 2020 and Lagos in July 2021, it has gained global popularity for treating fibroids and other conditions.

Ajayi clarified that while HIFU offers symptom relief by targeting and destroying fibroid tissue without surgery, it is not a guaranteed infertility treatment. The primary goal should be alleviating symptoms rather than restoring fertility.

Medical expert Evans Onyeakele, a former Registrar of the FCT chapter of the Private Health Establishment Registration and Monitoring Committee, praised HIFU’s non-invasive nature, eliminating the need for open surgery and reducing blood loss. He stressed that HIFU is particularly beneficial for those facing severe fibroid complications, which can be life-threatening.

Patients who have undergone HIFU shared positive experiences, highlighting the procedure’s painless nature and the absence of scarring. Ajayi noted that HIFU has a global success rate exceeding 90% and a remarkable 100% success rate at Nordica, treating 475 patients, demonstrating its effectiveness and reliability in fibroid care.

Experts and patients alike have recommended HIFU for its exceptional outcomes, making it a significant advancement in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
