ATCON, NCC and others are rallying for a 70% national broadband goal

The Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, in collaboration with the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), set a lofty goal of reaching 70% broadband penetration in Nigeria by 2025.

This aim is noteworthy because broadband penetration now stands at 42.27 percent, requiring the Ministry to more than double broadband penetration in the next five years.

There are others who, like with all progressive ideas and initiatives, decide prematurely that things will not work or change.

The same can be said for negative comments from some quarters that the 2025 aim was doomed from the start, despite all evidence pointing to policymakers having what it takes to meet the goal this time.

The 70% penetration aim is definitely attainable, especially when industry participants realize that Kenya and Rwanda have significantly higher broadband penetration rates than Nigeria, while having lower GDP per capita income.
The Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has obtained support from the NCC and other stakeholders for a national strategic mobilization to achieve the 70 percent national broadband target.

The Association intends to have a conference and exhibition with the theme of achieving the new established goal of 70% broadband penetration.

The conference will take place in Chida Event Centre, Plot 224, Solomon Lar Way, Utako District, Abuja, on Thursday, June 9, 2022.
“We have received confirmation of attendance from Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, Honourable Minister, Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy; Prof Umar Garba Danbatta, EVC/CEO, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC); Mr Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director-General/CEO, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA); and Dr Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner, Nigeria Data Protection Bureau.” Other industry thought leaders are likely to attend as well,” stated ATCON President Engr Ikechukwu Nnamani.
