A new foundation named in honor of the late Professor Gabriel Olalere Ajayi, pioneer Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has been established to bolster Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.
The Professor Gabriel Olalere Ajayi Foundation was formally launched in Lagos alongside a memorial lecture celebrating his legacy. Professor Ajayi, who served as NITDA’s director-general from 2001 to 2004, was instrumental in developing Nigeria’s first National Information Technology Policy framework.
Former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, once a student of the late professor, praised Ajayi’s dedication to nurturing talent for Nigeria’s digital economy. “He taught with passion and was committed to raising Nigerians who would add value to the nation’s technological advancement. I cherish his memory,” Irabor said.
Technology expert Chris Uwaje highlighted Ajayi’s visionary leadership, recalling their collaboration in drafting the 2002 National IT Policy, with Ajayi as Chairman and Uwaje as Vice Chairman. Uwaje described him as “a man whose vision was far ahead of his time.”
In his welcome address, Dr. Olaniyi Ajayi, son of the late professor, said the foundation was inspired by his father’s lifelong commitment to education and empowerment. “He sacrificed his time and comfort so others could learn, grow, and stand on their own feet.”
Delivering the keynote address, the current Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, honored Ajayi as a distinguished academic and professor of telecommunications engineering who brought both technical expertise and strategic foresight to Nigeria’s journey into the digital age.
The foundation aims to continue Professor Ajayi’s legacy by supporting digital literacy, innovation, and policy development in line with Nigeria’s technological aspirations.
