Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) Examines Alleged Data Breach by GTB and Zenith Bank

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has initiated an investigation into allegations of unauthorized disclosure of banking records and unlawful access to personal data by GTB and Zenith Bank.

In a statement released by NDPC’s National Commissioner and CEO, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the investigation will encompass the data governance practices of the banks across all their branches in Nigeria, as well as extend to third parties involved in data processing activities.

The bureau expressed concern over the lack of implementation of data privacy and protection regulations and urged organizations to comply with federal government directives requiring them to provide the names of their Data Protection Officers/Contacts.

With reports from the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) indicating a significant number of fraud attempts, NDPC stressed the importance of robust data security and privacy measures to mitigate such vulnerabilities.

NDPB’s head of legal enforcement and regulations, Babatunde Bamigboye, emphasized the need for financial institutions to comply with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) 2019 and implement effective data governance systems, following the example set by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
