A significant accomplishment has been achieved at the ECOWAS headquarters with the signing of four important Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) pertaining to the Nigeria Morocco Gas Pipeline Project. Furthermore, the project’s Steering Committee held a meeting to review its progress and strategic trajectory.
In a statement by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPC Limited, Garba Deen Muhammad, on Friday, June 16, in Abuja, four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed as part of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project. These MoUs, involving multiple parties, were consecutively signed between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and the Office National des Hydrocarbures et des Mines (ONHYM) of Morocco, as well as the Société Nationale des Opérations Pétrolières of Cote d’Ivoire (PETROCI), the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL), the Société Nationale des Hydrocarbures of Benin (SNH-Benin), and the Société Nationale des Pétroles of the Republic of Guinea (SONAP).
These newly signed Memoranda of Understanding, akin to those signed previously with ECOWAS on September 15, 2022, Mauritania and Senegal on October 15, 2022, and The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, and Ghana on December 5, 2022, reiterate the Parties’ dedication to this crucial project. Upon its completion, the project will facilitate the effective utilization of natural gas resources in the involved African nations while also providing an alternative export route to Europe.
He says during the Steering Committee meeting of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project, several signings took place involving representatives from ECOWAS and participating countries including Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, The Gambia, Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco.
This significant infrastructure initiative aims to enhance energy accessibility, improve living conditions, foster economic integration, and combat desertification. By providing sustainable and dependable gas supply in line with Africa’s environmental commitments, the project will introduce a new economic, political, and strategic dimension to the continent.
During his speech, the Group CEO, NNPC Ltd., Mr. Mele Kyari, expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian Government for assigning the strategic Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project to NNPC Ltd. as the National Energy Company. He emphasized that this project presents a chance for NNPC Ltd. to capitalize on Nigeria’s plentiful hydrocarbon resources and expand energy accessibility to foster economic growth, industrialization, and job opportunities not only in Africa but also beyond.
Furthermore, the Director General of ONHYM, Amina Benkhadra highlighted the significance of the gathering as a progressive move towards achieving social and economic development through energy security and accessibility. She emphasized the goal of fostering comprehensive African development led by Africans.
The ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy, and Digitization, Mr. Sédiko Douka, highlighted the importance of the gas pipeline project in enhancing the region’s electricity generation capacity, promoting industrial and agricultural progress, and facilitating the transition to cleaner energy sources. He emphasized the project’s significance in driving energy development and sustainability within the region.
