President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that over 126 million Nigerians have been successfully registered in the National Identity Database and issued their National Identity Numbers (NIN).
The President, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Senator George Akume, made the disclosure at an event held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, commending the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) for clearing a backlog of more than 2.5 million records in the last two years.
He praised NIMC’s efforts to enforce integrity within the system, including the arrest of more than 30 individuals operating illegal registration centres.
“Behind this number are workers who can now claim their pensions without fear of fraud. Students can access loans and scholarships with ease, farmers receive targeted incentives that boost productivity, and displaced persons now have proof of identity that enables them to benefit from humanitarian support. This is the true power of identity, and this is the progress we celebrate,” Tinubu said.
The President also highlighted the growing global reach of the programme, noting that over 200 diaspora centres now serve Nigerians abroad, while refugees, internally displaced persons, and inmates of correctional facilities have been enrolled. A disability inclusion policy has also been rolled out, training more than 5,000 enrolment agents to serve persons with disabilities.
Tinubu revealed that the national database has been upgraded from a capacity of 100 million to 250 million records, ensuring no Nigerian is left out. Over 1,500 enrolment devices are now deployed nationwide, supported by over 200 diaspora centres.
He further disclosed that NIMC has integrated with 125 partner agencies to improve service delivery and reduce duplication. These include the Nigeria Immigration Service for passport issuance, the Federal Inland Revenue Service for tax records, the National Population Commission for birth registration, the National Health Insurance Authority for healthcare enrolment, and UBEC for school records. Working with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), NIMC has also enforced the NIN-SIM linkage to curb fraud and strengthen national security.
Operational excellence has been prioritised through staff training, new tools, a world-class customer care centre, and upgraded enrolment facilities. Over 2,800 staff have received promotions, salary adjustments have been implemented, and enrolment centres have been rehabilitated nationwide.
Tinubu concluded by emphasising the Commission’s data security measures, including clampdowns on extortion, phishing sites, and fraudulent operators, while maintaining ISO 27001:2022 certification for data security. The launch of the High Availability Verification Service now guarantees 99.9% uptime for identity verification processes.
