FG to Leverage ACReSAL Project for National Food Security

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to harness the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) Project, a World Bank-supported initiative, as a strategic tool in its push to improve food security across Nigeria.

Speaking at the ACReSAL Project-Wide Retreat for Steering and Technical Committees, the Minister of Environment, Malam Balarabe Lawal, said the project directly tackles the impacts of climate change such as desertification and land degradation, especially in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Lawal emphasized the need to scale up rainwater harvesting efforts through ACReSAL, stating it could promote all-season farming, reduce dependency on rain-fed agriculture, and ensure consistent water supply for forest restoration and food production.

“Rainwater harvesting is a significant area where ACReSAL could expand its efforts,” he noted, suggesting it could help convert devastating floodwaters into valuable agricultural resources.

Echoing this, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, highlighted the project’s success in promoting climate-resilient practices and rehabilitating degraded lands.

“By tackling land degradation and climate challenges, we are not only securing livelihoods but also building a foundation for a more prosperous and resilient Nigeria,” Abdullahi said.

Also speaking at the event, Dr. Joy Agene, Task Team Leader for ACReSAL and Senior Environmental Specialist at the World Bank, confirmed that the project has made strong progress. She said that nearly 200,000 hectares of degraded landscapes have been restored out of a 1 million hectare target, describing ACReSAL’s two-year performance as “satisfactory.”

ACReSAL is a collaborative initiative led by the Federal Government through the Ministries of Environment, Agriculture, and Water Resources, with the active involvement of 19 northern state governments and the FCT. It aims to combat desertification, boost climate resilience, and improve agricultural outcomes in Nigeria’s semi-arid regions.
