The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that more than 25 million phones were stolen in Nigeria between March 2023 and April 2024. This alarming statistic is part of the bureau’s Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey 2024.
According to the report, approximately 17,965,741 individuals were victims of phone theft during the period under review. The survey highlighted that phone theft remains the most prevalent crime affecting individuals in the country, with seven out of every ten cases occurring either at home or in public places.

The survey also revealed that only 11.7% of those who reported phone theft to the police expressed satisfaction with the authorities’ response. Furthermore, less than 10% of victims reported the crime, while over 90% did not engage the police due to a lack of confidence or other reasons.
“At the individual level, 21.4% of Nigerians reported being victims of crime, with phone theft accounting for 13.8% of the total,” the report stated.
The findings highlight the increasing need for improved security measures and better law enforcement responses to address the widespread issue of phone theft in Nigeria.
