NCC Faults Starlink for Increasing Data Tariffs Without Approval

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has disclosed that Starlink’s recent hike in subscription prices was carried out without prior approval from the regulatory authority. This was revealed in a statement signed by Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, on October 8, 2024.

According to the NCC, Starlink’s unilateral decision to revise its subscription rates violated Sections 108 and 111 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, as well as the conditions of its license regarding tariffs.

In response to this violation, the Commission initiated pre-enforcement action against Starlink on October 3, 2024, expressing concern over the company’s disregard for regulatory procedures.

“The company’s decision to adjust its prices without approval undermines regulatory stability in the telecommunications sector. We will take appropriate enforcement measures against any such actions by licensees,” the NCC stated.

The regulatory body emphasized its commitment to maintaining industry standards and preventing actions that could disrupt the stability of Nigeria’s telecom industry.
