Former Senator Dino Melaye has been acquitted in the last of 12 cases filed against him by the Federal Government, bringing a six-year legal battle to an end. Justice Sylvanus Oriji of the FCT High Court, Maitama, delivered the final verdict, clearing Melaye of charges related to providing false information about an alleged 2017 assassination attempt.
The case began in February 2018 when Melaye was accused of falsely implicating Edward Onoja, former chief of staff to Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, in the plot. On Monday, Melaye took to social media to celebrate the court’s decision, thanking his legal team and emphasizing his faith in divine justice.

Melaye posted, “Justice served after six years. Justice delayed is never justice denied,” adding, “God alone be praised. SEN. DINO MELAYE 12 – FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND IGP 0. 12 CASES ALL WON BY GOD.” The protracted legal battle saw numerous delays, including the death of Justice Aromeh Benson Akogu, the judge initially assigned to the case, in late 2017.
The legal saga originated from allegations Melaye made about an attempted assassination in his hometown of Ayetoro-Gbede, Kogi State, which he linked to political figures. The Attorney General’s Office formally charged him in early 2018, but he consistently maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty to the charges.
Beyond this case, Melaye also faced several other allegations, including claims in 2018 that Kogi State police attempted to kill him, which he linked to a shooting incident involving his security detail. He further alleged conspiracies against his life in 2019, all of which were denied by state authorities.
