Zamfara State Aims to Empower 100,000 Farmers in 4 years

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to bolstering the agricultural sector and providing robust support to farmers within the state. This pledge was reiterated during the launch of the Nigeria Coronavirus Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus program, which marked the distribution of agricultural assets and farm inputs.

The event, hosted at the Ministry of Agriculture, focused on the commencement of the FADAMA III project and targeted beneficiaries across all 14 local government areas within Zamfara State. Sulaiman Idris, the governor’s spokesperson, conveyed these initiatives in a statement, emphasizing the transformative agenda designed to empower farmers and uplift the agricultural landscape.

Governor Lawal outlined the comprehensive plan to empower 100,000 farmers over the next four years through the FADAMA III program. He stressed the strategic importance of this program amid the COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus Program, underscoring its multi-sectoral approach aimed at steering the state toward a resilient post-pandemic recovery.

Highlighting the significance of agricultural revitalization, Governor Lawal underscored the critical role of the agricultural sector in the state’s economy. He affirmed the administration’s commitment to enhancing food security by directly supporting 11,760 farmers with essential inputs such as fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, improved seeds, and seed dressing chemicals.

In preparation for the forthcoming dry season, the government has allocated 33,000 bags of fertilizer, comprising 22,000 bags of NPK and 11,000 bags of Urea. Additionally, plans include distributing over 700 power tillers and providing rice and maize seeds to 19,000 farmers. The governor also detailed empowering 735 groups, each consisting of 10 farmers, with power tillers, while another 2,550 individuals will receive small ruminant animals.

Governor Lawal affirmed the government’s continuous commitment to offering vital input support, constructing and rehabilitating access roads, and allocating assets to bolster production while tackling food loss and waste—a comprehensive approach aimed at fortifying Zamfara State’s agricultural foundation.
