WAEC to Introduce Computer-Based Exams Starting 2024

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced its decision to transition from Paper and Pencil Tests to Computer-Based Examinations for the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates. This shift will be implemented starting with the WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2024 First Series, scheduled for February 2024.

According to a statement released by the Council on Monday, the Objective Tests will be entirely computer-based, while the Essay and Test of Practical papers will be hybrid. In the hybrid format, exam questions will be presented on-screen, and candidates will write their answers on the provided answer booklets.

 

The computer-based exams will be conducted in urban centers and cities, with provisions made for candidates with special needs. The registration for the examination is set to commence on Monday, December 18, 2023.

To familiarize candidates with the new examination platform, WAEC has arranged for a Mock Examination to take place in February 2024, just before the official examination begins. The Council expressed its vision for all its examinations to be delivered via computer in the near future, encouraging candidates to enhance their computer skills and be fully prepared for this innovative approach.

 

WAEC’s move aligns with global best practices and aims to enhance the examination process by leveraging computer-based technology.
