The United States Embassy in Nigeria has announced significant changes to its visa services for the Abuja and Lagos consulates, set to take effect from August 26, 2024. This update follows numerous complaints from Nigerian applicants about late appointment dates and racketeering at the Lagos consulate.
In an announcement made on its website and official X account on Wednesday, the embassy stated, “The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos are moving to a new visa services provider on August 26, 2024.”

The embassy explained that applicants who have already booked an appointment will lose access to the U.S. travel website starting August 16. “This means you will not be able to cancel or reschedule your appointment from August 16, 2024, and will have no access to customer service. You should print your appointment confirmation letter before August 16, 2024, and we strongly encourage you to attend your visa interview if possible – if you fail to appear for your scheduled interview, please check here on or after August 26, 2024, for instructions on rescheduling your appointment,” the announcement stated.
A new visa appointment website will be launched on August 26 to streamline visa services. This change aims to address the difficulties many Nigerians have faced in securing appointment dates despite paying visa fees.
The embassy’s move to a new service provider is expected to improve the efficiency and accessibility of visa services for Nigerian applicants.
