United States military forces, under the direction of President Donald Trump, carried out a series of airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists in northwestern Nigeria on Christmas Day. The operation was conducted in coordination with Nigerian authorities, according to U.S. Africa Command.
President Trump announced the strikes in a post on his Truth Social platform late Thursday, stating that the action was taken in response to continued violence by militants targeting Christians in Nigeria.
“Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS terrorist scum in Northwest Nigeria, who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at levels not seen for many years,” Trump wrote.
He warned that further attacks would follow if militant violence continued, stating, “I have previously warned these terrorists that if they did not stop the slaughtering of Christians, there would be hell to pay, and tonight, there was.”
U.S.-Nigerian Coordination Confirmed
In a statement on X, U.S. Africa Command confirmed that the strikes, which took place in Sokoto State, resulted in multiple ISIS casualties. The command emphasized that the operation was carried out “at the direction of the President of the United States and the Secretary of War, and in coordination with Nigerian authorities.”
U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth also acknowledged the cooperation of the Nigerian government in the operation. “Grateful for Nigerian government support & cooperation,” he stated in a post on X.
Heightened Security Concerns
The airstrikes occurred amid ongoing insecurity in Nigeria, including a suspected suicide bombing at a mosque in Maiduguri the previous day that killed at least five people and injured dozens. Nigeria faces threats from multiple armed groups, including Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and criminal bandit networks.
Last month, President Trump warned that he might cut off U.S. aid to Nigeria and consider military action if the Nigerian government did not take stronger measures to protect Christians from extremist violence.
Broader Context of U.S. Military Activity
The strikes in Nigeria are part of a series of military actions undertaken by the Trump administration since his return to office in January 2025, including operations in Yemen, Somalia, Iraq, Syria, and Iran. The administration has also recently recalled more than two dozen U.S. ambassadors appointed under former President Joe Biden, signaling a shift in diplomatic and security engagement.
Analysts note that while the airstrikes demonstrate U.S. willingness to intervene directly, Nigeria’s security challenges remain deeply rooted in complex regional, economic, and political factors. It is unclear whether targeted military actions alone will significantly alter the security landscape in the long term.
President Trump has made clear, however, that further strikes could follow if attacks on civilians continue.
