Tinubu Renames University of Maiduguri After Late Buhari

In a historic tribute to honour the legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University.

The announcement was made on Thursday during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the State House, Abuja, convened to honour the late president, who passed away on July 13, 2025, in a London hospital.

President Tinubu described the renaming as a fitting tribute to a leader whose decades of service—both as a former military head of state and a two-term elected president—left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political and developmental landscape.

“President Tinubu renames University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University,” wrote Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, via his official X account, confirming the development.

The FEC tribute session was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, ministers, National Assembly leaders, judiciary representatives, and members of Buhari’s family. The atmosphere was solemn yet reverent, as the nation reflected on the statesman’s contributions to governance, national unity, anti-corruption efforts, and regional security—particularly in the North-East.

The University of Maiduguri, a premier federal institution in Borno State, played a pivotal role in academic resilience amid the insurgency crisis and now stands as a national symbol of Buhari’s enduring legacy. The renaming is part of broader national mourning rites, which include a state funeral in Daura, Katsina State, and a seven-day period of mourning ordered by President Tinubu.

The newly named Muhammadu Buhari University is expected to carry forward his values of discipline, integrity, and commitment to national progress.
