Tinubu, FEC Abolish Niger Delta and Sports Ministries

President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council (FEC) have abolished the Ministry of Niger Delta and the Ministry of Sports Development in a major government restructuring. This decision was made during the FEC meeting in Abuja and announced on Wednesday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Tinubu, via his official X handle.

In place of the Niger Delta Ministry, a new Ministry of Regional Development has been established to oversee regional development commissions across the country. These include the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the North West Development Commission, the South West Development Commission, the North East Development Commission, and the South East Development Commission. The move is aimed at consolidating regional governance under one ministry for greater efficiency.

The role of the now-scrapped Ministry of Sports Development will be taken over by the National Sports Commission, which will be responsible for managing and promoting sports in the country.

Additionally, the FEC approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy, combining efforts to better promote Nigeria’s cultural and tourism sectors. These changes reflect the administration’s efforts to streamline governance and improve efficiency in key areas of national development.
