President Bola Tinubu granted his approval for the appointment of Mr. Ola Olukoyede as the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. This appointment is initially for a four-year term, subject to Senate confirmation, and it follows the suspension of the former anti-graft agency chief, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, which occurred nearly four months ago.
The announcement of Mr. Olukayode’s appointment was made in a statement released by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale. Mr. Ola Olukoyede, a distinguished lawyer with more than 22 years of experience, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). His expertise lies in regulatory compliance consultation, fraud management, and corporate intelligence.
Notably, he possesses extensive knowledge of EFCC operations, having previously served as Chief of Staff to the Executive Chairman (2016-2018) and Secretary to the Commission (2018-2023). His appointment fulfills the statutory requirement for the Chairman’s position, following the resignation of the suspended Executive Chairman, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa.
Additionally, President Bola Tinubu has given his approval for the appointment of Mr. Muhammad Hassan Hammajoda as the Secretary of the EFCC. Mr. Hammajoda, a seasoned public administrator with a strong background in public finance management, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Maiduguri and a Masters in Business Administration from the same institution.
His career journey includes an academic role as a lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, and successful tenures in the banking sector, with experiences at the defunct Allied Bank and Standard Trust Bank.
The appointment of these key figures in the EFCC marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to strengthen the fight against corruption in Nigeria. President Bola Tinubu emphasizes the importance of their roles in justifying the trust placed in them as part of his Renewed Hope agenda, which prioritizes a reformed institutional framework in the anti-corruption sector.
