Telecoms Sector on the March Again, Says ALTON Chairman Engr. Gbenga Adebayo

Nigeria’s telecommunications sector is entering a new era of growth, with fresh investments, stronger governance, and renewed optimism driving the industry forward. This was the assurance of Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), who spoke over the weekend at the unveiling of Nigeria’s first Digital Museum, an initiative powered by IHS Towers to preserve and showcase the nation’s cultural heritage. Commending IHS Towers for its leadership, Engr. Adebayo described the project as a shining example of corporate citizenship that honours Nigeria’s past while building the infrastructure of the future.

According to him, the sector is now witnessing the highest level of investment since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Operators are expanding and modernising networks, building new sites to meet capacity demands, upgrading infrastructure, and migrating from outdated radio links to faster fibre connections. He noted that Tower Companies are also boosting site security by fitting removable batteries and generators with trackers, cautioning the public against purchasing stolen telecom equipment.

He explained that while network optimisation may occasionally disrupt services, the long-term goal is to deliver a much-improved user experience nationwide. ALTON members, he added, are retraining their workforce to adapt to emerging technologies, in line with strict service standards set by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Engr. Adebayo expressed delight at the inauguration of the new NCC Board led by Mr. Idris Olorunimbe as Chairman, alongside the Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, and other commissioners. He said the industry is excited about this leadership team, whose competence, vision and commitment give confidence that the sector is firmly on the path of sustainability and growth.

The ALTON Chairman also hailed the rebranding of 9mobile to T2, describing it as a rebirth that enhances investor confidence, reassures the public, and signals good times ahead for the industry.

On policy issues, he urged state governments to provide enabling environments for telecom expansion, warning that states that create obstacles risk being left behind, while supportive states will attract investments and stronger connectivity for their citizens. He also commended the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for reforms being championed by the Presidential Tax and Fiscal Policy Reform Committee. These reforms, he said, will streamline Nigeria’s tax system and eliminate multiple taxation, paving the way for entrepreneurship, investment and economic growth.

Engr. Adebayo concluded by reaffirming ALTON’s commitment to the Nigerian project and thanking stakeholders for their collaboration. He said the transformation currently taking place in the sector is unprecedented in recent years. With the leadership of the NCC, the support of the new Board, and the cooperation of the Nigerian people in protecting critical infrastructure, the industry, according to him, is once again on the march, unstoppable as a driver of national stability and growth.
