Telecom Workers Protest Tariff Hike, Demand Urgent Review

The Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN) has raised concerns over the recent tariff increment in the telecommunications sector, calling for an urgent review to protect consumers and industry workers.

In a strongly worded letter, PTECSSAN highlighted the financial strain the tariff increase would impose on Nigerians already battling economic challenges. The union also pointed out that the hike could lead to decreased access to essential telecom services, further widening the digital divide.

The letter, addressed to key stakeholders in the industry, emphasized the need for government intervention to prevent excessive costs from burdening both subscribers and telecom employees. PTECSSAN warned that without proper regulation, the hike could lead to job losses and reduced service quality as consumers cut back on spending.

“We urge the relevant authorities to reconsider this tariff increase and implement policies that balance the needs of telecom operators, employees, and the general public,” the union stated.

Industry analysts suggest that the tariff hike may be linked to rising operational costs, inflation, and foreign exchange fluctuations. However, consumer rights groups have echoed PTECSSAN’s concerns, arguing that such increases must be gradual and justified.

PTECSSAN has called for dialogue with telecom operators, regulatory bodies, and the government to find a fair resolution. The union warned that if its concerns are not addressed, it may resort to industrial action to protect the rights of its members and the public.

The development has sparked nationwide debate, with many Nigerians calling for transparency in telecom pricing and stronger consumer protection policies.

For now, stakeholders await the response of telecom regulators and operators as pressure mounts for a review of the new tariff structure.
