Telecom Operators Threaten Service Disruption Over Tariff Hike

Telecom operators in Nigeria have issued a warning of potential service disruptions if the federal government fails to implement an upward review of tariffs in the sector.

The Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, stressing that operators are grappling with rising operational costs that threaten their ability to sustain services.

Adebayo warned of “service shedding” in certain areas if immediate action is not taken.

“If nothing is done, we might begin to see grim consequences in the new year, such as service shedding,” he said. “Operators may not be able to provide services in some areas or at certain times of the day, leaving millions disconnected. This will have significant economic fallout, as businesses will suffer from a lack of connectivity, stalling growth and innovation.”

He highlighted the potential national implications, noting that critical sectors such as security, commerce, healthcare, and education, which rely heavily on telecom infrastructure, would face severe disruptions.

Adebayo further stated that telecom operators have been operating at a financial loss in recent months due to Nigeria’s economic challenges, which have increased the cost of maintaining infrastructure and delivering services.

Operators have repeatedly appealed to the federal government for a tariff adjustment to offset escalating costs. However, the lack of a response has left the sector in a precarious position.

The warning underscores the urgent need for regulatory action to ensure the continued delivery of reliable telecommunication services, which are vital to the nation’s economic and social stability.
