Telecommunication giants in Nigeria, including MTN, Airtel, and Globacom, are urging the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to authorize a tariff hike to reflect current economic realities. In a joint statement issued by the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), industry leaders highlighted the pressing need for regulatory support to address challenges facing the sector.
According to Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of ALTON, and Tony Emoekpere, President of ATCON, the telecommunications industry requires substantial investments in infrastructure development, network expansion, maintenance, and technology upgrades. Despite these investment demands, the industry has not adjusted its pricing framework in over a decade due to regulatory constraints.
The statement emphasized that the current pricing mechanism, which has not kept pace with economic realities, poses a threat to the industry’s sustainability and investor confidence. In a sector that operates under liberalization and deregulation, regulatory constraints on pricing undermine operators’ financial viability while hindering infrastructure development and service quality improvements.

ALTON and ATCON have called upon the government to engage in constructive dialogue with industry stakeholders to address pricing challenges. The telcos emphasize that regulatory neutrality and independence are crucial for maintaining a thriving telecommunications sector.
Acknowledging the statutory provisions that emphasize the importance of an impartial regulator, the telcos stress the need for regulatory decisions that inspire public confidence in the objectivity and independence of the regulatory body. They urge the NCC to uphold its mandate to foster a competitive and sustainable telecommunications environment.
