Former Senator Ayodele Arise has criticized the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) for diverting its focus from national identity registration to issuing multipurpose payment cards.
Speaking on Tech TV, Arise, who chairs Card Technologies Limited, warned that the proposed card could create security risks, economic disruptions, and unnecessary complications. He argued that financial institutions, not NIMC, should handle payment cards, just as banks do worldwide.
“If someone cracks the card, they gain access to your bank and personal details,” he cautioned, expressing concerns over security vulnerabilities.
He also pointed out that the initiative could undermine state revenue from driver’s license issuance and create logistical challenges for managing multiple bank accounts on one card. Instead, he urged NIMC to focus on expanding national identity registration to cover more Nigerians.
Arise called for a clear separation of financial services from national identity management, insisting that the current system of separate cards for banking, driver’s licenses, and national identification aligns with global best practices.
