Renowned legal luminary and human rights advocate, Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN, delivered a powerful keynote lecture on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at the NAF Centre in Abuja, as part of the burial obsequies for elder statesman, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark.
Titled “Unity, Equity and Justice in Nigeria: Shall the Labour of Our Heroes Past Be in Vain?”, Ozekhome’s address tackled the pressing challenges of national cohesion, marginalisation, and the pursuit of true federalism. Drawing from historical, constitutional, and moral perspectives, he called for renewed patriotism anchored on justice and fairness, warning that Nigeria’s continued unity must not be taken for granted without addressing long-standing grievances among its diverse peoples.
The solemn but reflective event drew a distinguished gathering of Nigerian statesmen, political leaders, and community representatives. Among those in attendance were former Head of State, General Yakubu Danjuma; former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan; Dr. John Nnia Nwodo, former President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo; Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, former Chief of Staff to the President; General IBM Haruna; former governors; senators; members of the diplomatic corps; and representatives of various ethnic nationalities.
A thought-provoking panel discussion followed the lecture, moderated by Professor Jerry Gana. Prominent Niger Delta activist, Ankio Briggs, and other thought leaders engaged with Ozekhome’s thesis, deepening the national conversation on how best to preserve the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding heroes.
The event not only honoured the legacy of Chief E.K. Clark but also reignited crucial debates on nation-building, equity, and the moral compass required to steer Nigeria toward a just and united future.
