President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has hailed the reopening of the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC) by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), calling it a significant achievement that reinforces public confidence in his administration.
The Warri Refinery resumed operations just weeks after NNPCL successfully restarted 60,000 barrels per day (bpd) at the Port Harcourt Refinery in November. The 125,000 bpd Warri Refinery, now operating at 60% capacity, marks a major milestone after years of inactivity.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to boosting local refining capacity and transforming Nigeria into a hub for downstream oil and gas activities in Africa. He highlighted the government’s comprehensive energy security strategy, which includes the rehabilitation of all four state-owned refineries—an initiative originally launched by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“The restart of the Warri Refinery brings immense joy to me and Nigerians. This development strengthens hope for the brighter future we promised,” President Tinubu stated. “I commend the Mele Kyari-led NNPCL team for their dedication to restoring Nigeria’s pride as a major oil-producing nation and for making significant progress in achieving energy efficiency and security.”
Tinubu also urged NNPCL to expedite ongoing repair work on the Kaduna Refinery and the second Port Harcourt Refinery (150,000 bpd) to further consolidate Nigeria’s position as a leading energy provider in Africa.
The WRPC is now focusing on the production and storage of critical products, including Straight Run Kerosene (SRK), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and both heavy and light naphtha, which are essential to meet domestic energy needs.
The reopening of the Warri Refinery is seen as a pivotal step in Nigeria’s journey toward energy independence and economic transformation.
