President Muhammadu Buhari approves the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB) and names Dr. Olatunji as the first National Commissioner.

The Nigeria Data Protection Bureau has been approved by President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR (NDPB). Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim, the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, has requested it (Pantami). The NDPB was founded in accordance with international best practices and will focus on data protection and privacy, among other things, for the country.

The successful execution of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) for a Digital Nigeria has considerably expanded data platform use and has expedited our society’s datafication. The importance of having a data protection and privacy institution has increased as a result of this.

Furthermore, the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), which was published in January 2019 as a supplement to the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Act 2007, has raised awareness of the importance of data protection and privacy.

The Bureau will be in charge of building on the NDPR’s accomplishments and assisting in the creation of primary data protection and privacy legislation.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner/Chief Executive Officer of the Bureau, has been recommended by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Pantami.

Dr. Olatunji was the Director of the eGovernment Development and Regulations Department at NITDA when he was appointed. He is from Ekiti State. The appointment is immediately effective.
