Over 12 million customers of First Bank Nigeria were left stranded on Tuesday as the bank’s digital platforms broke down, leaving them unable to access the bank’s app or carry out any financial transactions. The issue persisted throughout October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day, leading to widespread frustration among customers.
Many angry customers expressed their dissatisfaction, calling out the bank for the inconvenience. One customer lamented, “First Bank has frustrated my business transactions. I can’t make payments for my orders, and I will be forced to patronize third-party services.”
Similarly, Olakunle Olabintan criticized the bank, stating that the app failure embarrassed him during a family outing. “I rely solely on my banking app, and it failed on a public holiday. I couldn’t pay for everything I purchased, and it messed my family and me up,” he said.
Another customer, Kolade Ojo, urged others to leave the bank, citing his inability to access his funds for over 24 hours. “First Bank’s app has been down for more than 24 hours. If you have an emergency or need your money, the card will fail, and you won’t access the app. Remove every penny you have with them once the network is back,” Ojo advised.
First Bank confirmed the collapse of its banking platforms but declined to provide a timeline for when the issue would be resolved. In a statement sent to customers, the bank acknowledged the disruption and requested patience: “We are aware that you may be experiencing challenges transacting on our FirstMobile platform. We apologize and ask that you bear with us as we work to rectify this issue in the shortest possible time.”
As of 3:50 AM on Wednesday, the banking app was still not operational.
