The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced a nationwide strike commencing on Monday, June 3rd, 2024. This decision follows the tripartite committee’s failure to reach an agreement on a new minimum wage and the recent hike in electricity tariffs.
TUC President Festus Osifo declared the strike during a joint news conference with NLC leadership in Abuja on Friday. The labour leaders cited the Federal Government’s inaction as the catalyst for their decision, noting the expiration of their earlier request to finalize new minimum wage negotiations by the end of May.

“In light of this persistent inaction, we, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), hereby issue a notice of commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike to the Federal Government,” Osifo stated. He emphasized that without the conclusion of the National Minimum Wage negotiation and its enactment into law, alongside the unresolved electricity tariff hike and consumer band categorization, Nigerian workers have no choice but to initiate the strike.
The labour unions had previously withdrawn from negotiations and rejected two Federal Government offers, the most recent being N60,000. They are steadfast in their demand for a N497,000 minimum wage. The removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira have significantly increased the cost of living in Nigeria, intensifying the calls for a new minimum wage.
In response to the economic strain, labour leaders proposed several measures, including a new minimum wage and alternative transportation modes to mitigate the effects of subsidy removal. Despite the establishment of a committee comprising labour leaders, government officials, and private sector representatives to negotiate the new wage, no consensus was reached, prompting the strike.
The Federal Government has yet to respond to the latest move by the NLC and TUC.
