NiMET Warns of Prolonged Excessive Heat in Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has issued a warning that the current spell of excessive heat being experienced in the country is expected to persist for some time. In its latest weather and climate update, NiMET highlighted the implications of the high temperatures and provided advice to the public on how to cope with the situation.

According to NiMET, air temperatures have soared to 41°C in the northern regions and 39°C in the southern regions of the country. Projections indicate that these high temperatures will continue in the coming days, exacerbating the heatwave.

The agency outlined the potential implications of the prolonged heatwave, including dehydration, heat-related illnesses, respiratory issues, and increased vulnerability to chronic conditions. Symptoms such as fainting, chickenpox, measles, heat rash, weakness, slight fever, and dry lips may manifest due to the extreme heat.

In light of these risks, NiMET issued advisories to help Nigerians mitigate the effects of the heatwave. Recommendations include staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, seeking shade, using fans, and wearing light, breathable clothing to reduce exposure to high temperatures. Additionally, individuals are advised to avoid strenuous physical activity during peak heat hours, typically between 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm, and to stay indoors as much as possible.

As Nigerians grapple with the challenges posed by the prolonged heatwave, adherence to these precautionary measures can help minimize the impact on health and well-being. NiMET continues to monitor weather patterns and provide updates to ensure the public remains informed and prepared for any changes in conditions.
