The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced a 49% increase in national identity enrolment over the past three years, reaffirming its drive to build a trusted and inclusive digital identity system. The Commission also called for deeper collaboration with the media to boost public awareness and digital inclusion across Nigeria.
The milestone was disclosed during a two-day media engagement workshop with online newspaper publishers held in Lagos. Representing the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Director of Information Technology and Identity Database, Engr. Lanre Yusuf, emphasized the crucial role of media partners in enhancing digital identity awareness and countering misinformation.
“Every Nigerian must understand the value of their identity,” said Yusuf. “Under the leadership of Engr. Coker-Odusote, the Commission has not only strengthened infrastructure but also introduced innovative tools to make identity enrolment faster, more secure, and accessible.”
Among the digital innovations introduced are the NINAuth mobile app and Contactless Biometric Solutions, aimed at improving enrolment accuracy, reducing wait times, and enabling millions of Nigerians to update or verify their identity records securely.
Despite the progress, Coker-Odusote stressed that improved infrastructure and tools are only effective if Nigerians are well-informed and engaged. She urged media professionals to join hands with the Commission in designing targeted campaigns, fact-checking initiatives, and educational content that demystify digital identity processes for the public.
“NIMC cannot succeed in isolation,” she stated. “To achieve true digital inclusion, we must bridge gaps in public awareness and digital literacy. With media support, we can ensure every Nigerian is empowered to say with confidence: I am recognized, I am included, I am identified.”
The workshop highlighted NIMC’s ongoing commitment to stakeholder engagement and its strategic goal of creating a robust, secure, and inclusive identity ecosystem that leaves no Nigerian behind.
