Nigeria’s 5G Subscriptions Reach 2.7 Million, Says NCC

In March 2024, Nigeria witnessed a surge in 5G subscriptions, totaling 2.7 million, marking a 1.24% penetration rate, as reported by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Despite this growth, 2G remains dominant, representing over half (56.97%) of all connections, while 3G holds a 9.04% share, and 4G subscriptions have risen from 25.06% in May 2023 to 32.74% in March 2024.

The expansion of 5G services by major operators like MTN, Airtel, and Mafab Communications in select cities has contributed to this increase. However, the high cost of 5G-compatible smartphones remains a significant barrier to wider adoption.

Although efforts are underway to expand coverage, affordability remains a challenge for many Nigerians. MTN, which pioneered the 5G network in September 2022, followed by Airtel in June 2023, and Mafab later in 2023, are striving to broaden their reach.

Nonetheless, the need for a more extensive range of affordable 5G devices is essential to fully leverage the potential of this next-generation technology in Nigeria. Mohammed Rufai, MTN’s Chief Technical Officer, emphasized the importance of maintaining older networks alongside newer ones due to device compatibility issues.
