Nigerians To Pay Higher Fees for Driver’s Licenses and Number Plates from June 8, 2025

Starting Sunday, June 8, 2025, Nigerians will face higher costs for obtaining driver’s licenses and vehicle number plates, following the approval of a new pricing structure by the Joint Tax Board (JTB).

Under the revised structure, a motor vehicle driver’s license will now cost ₦15,000 for a three-year validity and ₦21,000 for a five-year validity. Tricycle and motorcycle operators will also be affected, with the three-year option now priced at ₦7,000, and the five-year version at ₦11,000.

The JTB explained that the increase is necessary to accommodate the integration of enhanced security features, rising production costs, and to align with international identification standards. The new rates are also expected to support improved service delivery and more robust road safety frameworks.

Motorists are advised to carry out all transactions via official channels such as the National Vehicle Identification System (NVIS) portal at nvis.frsc.gov.ng or licensed state offices to avoid overcharging by unauthorized agents or touts.

To ensure smooth implementation and public awareness, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has been directed to embark on a nationwide sensitisation campaign. The agency is expected to work closely with state licensing offices to manage the transition and prevent service bottlenecks.

While some Nigerians have expressed concerns about the timing of the fee increase—amid rising inflation and economic hardship—authorities maintain that the revision is long overdue and vital for modernising Nigeria’s road traffic administration systems.

Motorists are urged to begin preparations early and ensure timely applications or renewals to avoid last-minute rushes or potential penalties.
