Nigerian Teen, Daniel Adeluyi, Makes History as First National Semifinalist in a $400,000 Global Science Competition

In a landmark achievement for Nigeria’s educational and scientific community, 16-year-old Daniel Adeluyi has become the first Nigerian student in history to reach the semifinals of the prestigious Breakthrough Junior Challenge. Selected from thousands of submissions across the globe, Daniel stands among only 30 semifinalists worldwide in a competition now in its eleventh year.

An Engaging Exploration of Cosmic Concepts

Daniel’s path to the semifinals was secured through an original, creatively produced two-minute video that demystifies the complex astrophysical concept of wormholes. The video combines clear scientific explanation with engaging visual storytelling, demonstrating his unique ability to translate intricate ideas into accessible content.

“For me, wormholes represent a path to reaching the seemingly unreachable,” Daniel explained. “I’ve always been fascinated by space, physics, and the mysteries of our universe. What draws me to science is how it transforms seemingly impossible concepts into tangible possibilities. This competition allowed me to merge my passion for scientific discovery with my interest in media production.”

Substantial Rewards at Stake

The Breakthrough Junior Challenge offers one of the most significant prize packages in global youth science competitions. The eventual winner will receive:
– A $250,000 college scholarship
– A $50,000 award for an inspiring teacher
– A $100,000 state-of-the-art science laboratory for their school

A Multifaceted Young Leader

Daniel’s accomplishments extend well beyond the laboratory. He previously served as Assistant Head Boy at Brickhall School Abuja, where he received the Chairman’s Award for Academic Excellence. Beyond academics, he captains his community’s U18 football team, taught himself to play keyboard, and has composed several original musical pieces.

His commitment to educational advancement is further demonstrated through BRAINS (Building Real-world Artificial Intelligence and Next-generation Skills), a youth-focused nonprofit he founded to provide younger students with early exposure to artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.

Cultivating a Scientific Mindset

Daniel attributes his communication skills to consistent engagement with high-quality educational content. He regularly watches National Geographic and history documentaries and has read scientific classics including Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time.”

“These resources helped me learn how to connect complex ideas and present them in ways that are both clear and engaging,” Daniel noted. “Those skills proved essential for this competition.”

Since 2021, he has volunteered in his church’s media unit, gaining practical experience in content production and storytelling that directly contributed to the polished presentation of his award-winning video.

A Call for National Support

Advancement to the final competition round depends on public engagement. The submission with the highest combined likes on the Breakthrough Prize’s official Facebook and YouTube channels will secure a guaranteed position in the finals.

Daniel is now calling on Nigerians both at home and abroad to support his historic journey. “I would be deeply grateful if people would watch my video and like it on both platforms if they find it interesting,” he said.
