The International Police Organisation (INTERPOL) has appointed Nigerian Police Commissioner Ifeanyi Uche as the Chairman of the African Heads of Cybercrime Units, comprising leaders from 54 nations. Uche, currently serving as the Commissioner of Police overseeing the NPF National Cyber Crime Centre, succeeds Ratjindua Tjivikua of Namibia in this role.
Speaking at the Africa Working Group Meeting on Cybercrime, Uche highlighted the urgent need to strengthen cybersecurity efforts across Africa in response to the escalating threat of cybercrime. He stressed the importance of enhanced cooperation among law enforcement agencies, as well as investment in technology and capacity building.

Uche emphasized the high penetration rate of new technologies in Africa, making the sub-regional cyberspace potential targets for cybercriminals, especially in countries with low levels of commitment to cybersecurity. He called for active participation in INTERPOL’s operational subgroups to enhance collective efficiency in combating cybercrime.
Furthermore, Uche underscored the significance of legislative support to enact robust cybersecurity laws and regulations to address the growing challenge of cybercrime effectively. He expressed his commitment to leading the African Heads of Cybercrime Units in fostering collaboration to prevent and investigate cybercrimes in Africa.
The Nigerian Minister of State for Police Affairs, Hajia Imaan Ibrahim, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening cybersecurity and international cooperation. She emphasized the government’s dedication to reforming the police force and enhancing cybersecurity capabilities to safeguard national and regional interests. Ibrahim emphasized the importance of a secure cyberspace for Nigeria’s development objectives and pledged to invest in necessary resources and foster collaboration domestically and internationally to bolster cybersecurity architecture.
