Nigeria’s international travel prospects received a boost as the country’s passport climbed to 88th place in the latest Henley Passport Index released on July 18, 2025, its highest position in five years. This marks a significant rise from 97th place in 2023, reflecting growing diplomatic engagement and efforts to modernize travel access for Nigerians.
According to the index, which evaluates passports based on the number of countries accessible without a prior visa, the Nigerian passport now offers visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 45 countries. While this figure remains the same as last year, the improved ranking underscores progress in bilateral relations and enhanced visa policies.
The Henley Passport Index, compiled using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), credited Nigeria’s upward mobility to its diplomatic outreach and regional partnerships. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, recently reaffirmed the country’s commitment to improving mobility for its citizens during a press briefing in Abuja.
In Africa, Nigeria now ranks seventh in passport strength, trailing only Seychelles, Mauritius, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Lesotho. This is a marked improvement from 2024, when Nigeria was among the bottom six on the continent.
Globally, Singapore maintains its position at the top with access to 193 destinations, while Afghanistan remains the lowest-ranked passport with access to just 25 countries. Nigeria shares its new 88th ranking with Ethiopia and Myanmar.
Since 2006, when it was ranked 62nd globally, the Nigerian passport has added 11 new destinations, despite challenges posed by global security protocols and immigration restrictions. Currently, Nigerian citizens still require visas for more than 181 countries.
The news has been met with optimism from Nigerian travellers and the business community, who see the improved ranking as a step toward increased global mobility, better trade opportunities, and stronger diplomatic presence.
Analysts expect the trend to continue as Nigeria intensifies reforms in immigration, enhances diplomatic alliances, and boosts digitalisation in passport services.
