NICO Urges Mandatory Cultural Training for Lawmakers, Diplomats, and Policy Makers

The National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) is advocating for a policy that would require lawmakers, policy makers, and diplomats to undergo cultural training and orientation. Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, the Executive Secretary/CEO of NICO, emphasized the importance of cultural understanding in governance during a presentation at the 2024 Management Retreat of the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy and its agencies in Abuja.

Ajiboye stressed that individuals responsible for making laws and policies must have a deep understanding of the culture of the people they serve. He highlighted the significant role of culture in policy making and lawmaking, noting that customs and traditions are integral to governance, politics, and government.

Acknowledging past neglect of culture in the policy process, Ajiboye emphasized the need to integrate cultural considerations into governance. He underscored the importance of redefining and reevaluating cultural values to address societal challenges and reduce societal ills.

As part of NICO’s mandate, Ajiboye expressed readiness to ensure that all lawmakers and policy makers participate in Mandatory Cultural Orientation Retreats to enhance their cultural understanding. He urged heads of agencies under the Ministry of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy to prioritize the redefinition and promotion of cultural values, emphasizing that culture is essential to national identity and societal cohesion.

In conclusion, NICO’s advocacy for mandatory cultural training reflects a commitment to promoting cultural awareness and appreciation among key decision-makers. By integrating cultural understanding into governance, policymakers can develop more inclusive and effective policies that resonate with the diverse cultural landscape of Nigeria.
