NICO Steps In To Ensure Befitting Burial for Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi

The National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) has responded to the pleas of the family of Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the Nigerian flag, to ensure he receives a dignified burial 10 months after his passing.

In a statement signed by Caleb Nor, Media Assistant to the Executive Secretary/CEO of NICO, it was noted that the Institute’s decision follows trending social media discussions about the apparent neglect of the burial arrangements for the late national hero. Recognizing this under the leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and aligning with cultural norms, NICO has taken a sincere interest in addressing this issue.

“The cry of the family of Late Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, who designed the Nigerian flag, has reached the federal government. NICO compassionately considers it necessary to coordinate with other agencies to ensure a befitting burial for this national hero.”

Ajiboye highlighted that the Nigerian flag is a significant cultural heritage, and NICO is mandated to promote both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. He added that the Honourable Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy, Barr. Hannatu Musa Musawa, has directed NICO to address this situation promptly.

The Institute is now in contact with the family to determine how the federal government can assist in giving Pa Akinkunmi a deserving farewell.
