The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has commenced a sweeping investigation into organisations across key sectors of the economy over alleged data breaches and non-compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023.
The probe will cover banks, insurers, pension operators, hospitality firms, gaming companies, and insurance brokers, among others, the commission announced on Sunday.
In a statement signed by Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of Legal, Enforcement and Regulations at the NDPC, the commission said the compliance notice forms part of a sector-by-sector review to enforce adherence to the law, which came into effect last year.
“These organisations are required to, within 21 days, provide evidence of filing NDP Act Compliance Audit Returns for 2024, designation of a Data Protection Officer, summary of technical and organisational measures for data protection, and evidence of registration as a Data Controller or Processor of Major Importance,” the statement said.
The NDPC warned that failure to comply could result in enforcement measures, including fines, enforcement orders, and possible criminal prosecution in line with the NDPA 2023. A list of affected organisations is expected to be published in national newspapers on Monday, August 25, 2025.
The commission stressed that the probe is intended not only to sanction offenders but also to entrench accountability and safeguard citizens’ rights in Nigeria’s data ecosystem.
“The NDPC remains committed to ensuring a culture of accountability and trust in Nigeria’s data protection and privacy ecosystem, while safeguarding the rights of data subjects and strengthening the nation’s digital economy,” it stated.
The regulator has in recent months stepped up enforcement efforts. In July, Multichoice Nigeria was fined ₦766.2 million for intrusive and disproportionate data practices, including illegal cross-border transfers of subscriber information.
