NDPC Advocates for Data Protection Compliance in Environment Ministry

The National Commissioner/CEO, Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, led some members of staff of the Commission on an advocacy visit to the Minister of State for Environment, Dr Ishaq Kunle Salako.

The purpose of the visit was to discuss awareness, compliance, and capacity-building initiatives. The NC provided an overview of the Nigerian Data Protection and Privacy Ecosystem, highlighting the Commission’s achievements and its significance since its establishment. He stressed the importance of all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) complying with the Data Protection Act, noting the low compliance level within the Federal Ministry of Environment and its parastatals, which may reflects on the nation’s credibility. He proposed a capacity-building workshop to enhance awareness, human capital development, and understanding of the data protection ecosystem.

Dr Ishaq Salako congratulated Dr. Olatunji and commended the Commission for its accomplishments in a short period. He underscored the rapid technological advancements and the associated risks of data manipulation, emphasising the need to be careful when using personal data online. He assured the Ministry of Environment’s commitment to supporting the Commission and complying with the NDPAct, 2023, including the development of a Privacy Policy and the appointment of a Data Protection Officer (DPO) within the Ministry. He expressed the Ministry’s readiness to engage in partnerships and collaborations, particularly regarding the proposed capacity-building initiatives.
