The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Abubakar Momoh, revealed a startling admission on Tuesday morning regarding the disappearance of the forensic report on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), according to Political Economist NG. Speaking on Channels TV Morning Brief, Momoh struggled to explain the whereabouts of the report, which detailed the misappropriation of N6 trillion allocated to the NDDC from 2001 to 2019 through various contracts and dubious deals.
The minister stated that upon assuming office last year, he requested the report from the Permanent Secretary and other relevant ministry staff but has yet to locate it. Momoh clarified that the report was submitted to former President Muhammadu Buhari, not to President Bola Tinubu.
Despite being pressed for clarity, Momoh reiterated that action would be taken against those implicated in the report once it is found. Political Economist NG noted that on September 2, 2021, President Buhari received the final forensic audit report detailing the misappropriation of N6 trillion by the NDDC. The report was presented by the then Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, and delivered to Buhari’s representative, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami.
The audit covered 13,777 contracts awarded from 2001 to 2019, with a total contract value exceeding N3 trillion. Malami highlighted that despite N6 trillion being approved for the NDDC over 18 years, a significant portion of the funds intended for the development of the Niger Delta region was diverted into private hands. The forensic audit aimed to ensure probity and accountability in public fund usage, revealing that the NDDC operated 362 bank accounts, leading to significant financial discrepancies.
Malami emphasized that the Buhari administration intended to apply the law to address the deficiencies highlighted in the report and recover misappropriated funds.
