NCC, NDPC Establish Joint Working Group to Strengthen Data Protection in Telecom Sector

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have launched a collaborative initiative aimed at bolstering data protection in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry. The newly inaugurated Data Protection in Telecommunications Working Group (DPTWG) was established in Abuja, with a mandate to safeguard the privacy rights of over 164 million mobile phone users across the country.

Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner/CEO of NDPC, emphasized the importance of this partnership in enhancing consumer data security and fostering Nigeria’s digital economy. He noted that the collaboration between NDPC and NCC would play a vital role in ensuring compliance with global data protection standards while driving national development.

On his part, Engr. Abraham Oshadami, Executive Commissioner (Technical Services) at NCC, reaffirmed NCC’s commitment to enforcing the Nigeria Data Protection Act (2023) within the telecom industry. He assured that NCC is ready to provide full support to the DPTWG in achieving its objectives.

The DPTWG has been assigned several key responsibilities, including developing innovative solutions for data protection and privacy within the telecom sector, building capacity for stakeholders to improve compliance and security measures and ensuring strict enforcement of data protection regulations within the telecom industry.

The establishment of this working group marks a significant step in securing digital communications in Nigeria. As the country continues to expand its digital economy, this strategic partnership between NDPC and NCC is expected to provide robust safeguards for telecom consumers and reinforce Nigeria’s commitment to data privacy and security.
