Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice-Chairman and CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has revealed a comprehensive five-year plan, emphasizing the need for expanded 5G networks and addressing challenges hindering the growth of the telecoms sector.
During a recent forum in Lagos, Dr. Maida expressed his commitment to tackling issues limiting the expansion of telecom services in Nigeria. Noting that 5G technology has reached only about 30 cities in the country, he urged Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and licensed 5G Telcos to extend their services to more locations.

The NCC, in 2022, granted 5G licenses to three major MNOs, including MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, Mafab Communications Limited, and Airtel Networks. Despite the initial progress, Dr. Maida aims for further network expansion, pushing licensees to roll out 5G services in additional cities.
As of August 2023, the NCC reported a 0.83 percent penetration of 5G subscriptions in Nigeria, with approximately 500,000 people enjoying the services. Dr. Maida stressed that enhancing telephony services in the telecoms ecosystem is crucial during his tenure.
In response to questions about Nigeria adopting 6G networks, Dr. Maida affirmed the nation’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technology. He emphasized the need to leverage and maximize the benefits of 5G before considering the transition to 6G.

Engr. Ubale Maska, Executive Commissioner, Technical Standard at NCC, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the ongoing efforts to deploy 5G across Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of maximizing 4G technology before delving into discussions about 5G and 6G.
While acknowledging that 2G still dominates network usage in the country, with 60.47 percent penetration, and 3G and 4G technologies cover 9.57 percent and 29.13 percent population penetration, respectively, the focus remains on the strategic deployment of advanced technologies.
Investments in 5G networks are expected to drive a 32 percent revenue increase for operators, potentially reaching $400 billion by the end of 2024. This aligns with global trends, as the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) reports that 5G has reached 40 percent of the global population since its launch in 2019.
