Over the weekend, many telecom subscribers found themselves unable to access their phone lines due to verification issues between their National Identification Numbers (NINs) and their Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs). This resulted in the blocking of their numbers by telecom service providers, in line with the NIN-SIM linkage laws and policies.
In a statement signed by Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reminded consumers and the public of the compulsory NIN-SIM linkage directive that began in December 2020. The government had mandated telecommunication companies to bar unregistered SIM cards and those not linked to NINs.

Since December 2023, the NCC has reviewed the deadline several times, with the most recent extension set for July 31, 2024, to give consumers more time to ensure their NIN details are properly verified. Despite these extensions, many phone lines remain unlinked to verified NINs.
The objectives of this exercise by the Federal Government of Nigeria include enhancing national security and ensuring the national SIM ownership database is accurate. The NIN-SIM linkage policy aims to verify and protect users’ identities while providing critical infrastructure to support a robust digital economy for citizens.
Considering the challenges the blockages have caused, the NCC has directed all operators to reactivate all lines that were disconnected over the weekend. Reactivated consumers are urged to properly link their NIN to their SIMs as soon as possible to maintain access to their lines. Members of the public who have yet to verify their SIMs are encouraged to do so promptly.
