The website of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), www.nigerianstat.gov.ng, has remained inaccessible for over three weeks following a cyber attack that disrupted its operations.
As of Friday, attempts to access the site continued to return an error message, signaling that the breach, initially confirmed by the NBS on December 18, 2024, has not yet been resolved. The agency had issued a statement via social media platform X, urging the public to disregard any information on the website until further notice.
The cyber attack occurred shortly after the release of the NBS’s Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey on December 17, which highlighted concerning trends in crime across Nigeria. The report revealed that Nigerians paid N2.23 trillion in ransom between May 2023 and April 2024, with 51.89 million crime incidents reported nationwide. The northwest recorded the highest number of incidents, while the southeast reported the least.

Following the survey’s publication, rumors circulated that the Department of State Services (DSS) had summoned Adeniran Adeyemi, the Statistician-General of the Federation, for questioning about the findings. However, the NBS swiftly denied the claims, stating that no such invitation or arrest had taken place.
Despite acknowledging the cyber breach, the NBS has yet to provide updates on its recovery efforts or disclose further details about the nature of the attack. The prolonged downtime has raised concerns about the bureau’s ability to maintain the integrity and accessibility of critical national data.
