MTN Finalizes 2.6GHz Spectrum Acquisition Deal to Boost Broadband Penetration

MTN Nigeria has officially obtained a 2.6GHz spectrum band from OPENSKYS Services Limited, with approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). According to a statement by Lakinbofa Goodluck, the public relations manager, the transfer of a 10MHz spectrum within the 2.6GHz band from OPENSKYS Services Limited to MTN Nigeria was authorized by the NCC and became effective on September 7, 2023.

The 2.6GHz spectrum band is specifically allocated for terrestrial mobile broadband services, guaranteeing its distribution throughout all 36 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The statement highlights that this spectrum harmoniously complements the 700MHz-800MHz spectrum bands, offering a cost-effective means to provide widespread mobile broadband coverage, encompassing both rural and urban areas.

As of December 2022, Nigeria’s broadband penetration was at 47.36 percent. The government aims to achieve 70 percent broadband penetration by 2025. MTN Nigeria’s acquisition of the broadband spectrum will help them enhance their broadband services, meeting the increasing demand for widespread mobile broadband coverage across the country.

The telecommunications giant emphasized that the spectrum acquisition would notably enhance its customers’ experience, aligning with its dedication to providing exceptional service. MTN also highlighted that this newly acquired spectrum would empower the delivery of broadband technologies, contributing to the realization of Nigeria’s broadband goals.

MTN Nigeria’s CEO, Karl Toriola, highlighted that the newly acquired spectrum will help fulfill their commitment to providing high-quality service and support the government’s goal of expanding broadband access. The company emphasized that improved broadband penetration, particularly in developing nations, correlates with higher GDP, emphasizing the importance of ongoing investment in broadband infrastructure like the 2.6GHz spectrum band.
