MTN, Digital Encode Support 2025 eBusinesslife Girls in ICT Campaign

MTN Nigeria and leading cybersecurity firm, Digital Encode, have thrown their weight behind the 2025 edition of the International Girls in ICT Day campaign organized by eBusiness Life Communication Limited. The event, scheduled to take place on May 15, 2025, at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, aims to inspire and empower girls to pursue careers in the ICT sector.

The annual initiative, originally launched by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), seeks to bridge the gender divide in the technology space. This year’s theme, “Girls in ICTs: Bridging ALL Divides for an Inclusive Digital Transformation,” emphasizes the importance of inclusivity and gender equity in the digital economy.

Convener and CEO of eBusiness Life Communication, Mrs. Ufuoma Emuophedaro, said the campaign is designed to spark interest in technology careers among young girls, particularly at a time when women remain underrepresented in Nigeria’s tech industry. Statistics reveal that women make up just 20% of the ICT workforce, with men nearly twice as likely to pursue careers in computer science and related fields.

Mrs. Emuophedaro stressed the importance of early intervention and exposure to career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), both in public and private sectors. She praised MTN Nigeria and Digital Encode for their continued support and commitment to bridging the gender gap in technology.

MTN Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest telecom operators with over 87 million subscribers, has been a longstanding supporter of digital empowerment initiatives, especially those focused on youth and women. Digital Encode, a top-tier cybersecurity and GRC consulting firm, has also played a key role in strengthening Nigeria’s digital resilience and security infrastructure.

The 2025 edition of the Girls in ICT campaign will feature activities such as an AI (Robotic) practical competition for female students from select secondary schools, a STEM quiz competition, and roundtable discussions with seasoned women ICT professionals.

International Girls in ICT Day, observed every fourth Thursday of April, was established by the ITU to encourage girls and young women worldwide to explore careers in the technology sector. This year’s event is expected to draw high-level attendees from both government and the private sector.
