Minister, Lawmakers, Stakeholders Applaud Young Innovators’ Drive for Nigeria’s Green Energy Transition at TED 2025

The 10th edition of the Young Innovators of Nigeria (YIN) Summit, themed “Green Technology and Energy Revolution”, held at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja, brought together key figures from government, legislature, and the energy sector, who commended YIN for championing Nigeria’s shift toward a green and digital economy.

Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Ayodele Olawande, represented by his Special Adviser, Mr. Obinna Ebere, praised the vision of YIN in mobilizing young people toward clean energy innovation. He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to equipping young Nigerians with the skills, platforms, and investments they need to thrive in the digital and green economy.

“The future of Nigeria will be written in digital codes, powered by renewable energy, and driven by the creativity of young people,” the minister said, stressing that no demographic group, including rural communities, young women, and vulnerable populations, should be left behind. He noted that government programmes are designed as pathways for young Nigerians to move from learning to earning, and from innovation to enterprise.

Chairman of the House Committee on Renewable Energy, Mr. Victor Ogene Afam, also lauded YIN’s efforts, affirming the National Assembly’s resolve to expand access to clean energy, create green jobs, and provide a strong policy environment for innovators and investors. He highlighted legislative initiatives such as the Nigerian Creative Green Jobs and Access Bill, which aims to institutionalize green job creation and embed climate-friendly practices into national development.

Afam underscored the importance of digitalization in energy transition, citing benefits of smart grids, AI-driven load management, and mobile-enabled vending systems that can boost transparency, reduce downtime by up to 30%, and improve payment collection efficiency to over 90%. He noted that replacing Nigeria’s estimated 60 million small diesel generators with digitally managed mini-grids could cut costs by up to 40% per kilowatt hour and create more than 200,000 green jobs over five years.

The Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Mr. Abubakar Aliyu, and other industry stakeholders echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the role of partnerships between government, innovators, and private sector players in accelerating the nation’s energy transition.

Speakers agreed that YIN’s summit serves as a platform for convergence of ideas, policy, and technology to transform businesses, empower youth, and make Nigeria a leader in Africa’s green economy.
