Minister Announces Launch of Passport Application Automation

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, unveiled plans for the commencement of an automated passport application process set to initiate on January 8, 2024. This significant technological advancement will enable Nigerians to seamlessly complete their passport application procedures online, eliminating the necessity for in-person engagements. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that this initiative aligns with the government’s vision for a more streamlined and efficient service delivery framework.

During an inspection of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) facilities in Abuja, the Minister, alongside Wura-Ola Adepoju, the Comptroller General (CG) of the Service, affirmed that the training process was underway to ensure a smooth launch of the automated system. This modernized approach aims to minimize human contact throughout the passport acquisition process while providing a more convenient experience for applicants.

 

The Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to heightening national security by reducing potential vulnerabilities associated with manual passport application procedures. This new system is poised to address challenges related to the submission of counterfeit documents, thereby enhancing the overall credibility of the process.

Tunji-Ojo further announced the deployment of document verification officers across all local government areas to meticulously review passport applications, ensuring the accuracy and legitimacy of submitted information.

The Minister expressed confidence that this innovation will significantly enhance the comfort and ease of passport acquisition for Nigerian citizens, reinforcing the government’s commitment to modernizing administrative procedures for the benefit of all.
