Meta and Universal Music Group Expand Partnership to Tackle AI-Generated Content

Meta and Universal Music Group (UMG) have strengthened their existing licensing partnership, broadening the scope of UMG’s music rights across Meta’s platforms. This updated agreement, announced today, extends UMG’s music rights to include WhatsApp for the first time, in addition to Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Horizon, and Threads.

The expanded deal builds on the initial partnership formed in 2017, which was a significant milestone for music licensing in the social media space. A key feature of the new agreement is the introduction of measures to address unauthorized AI-generated content, a growing concern in the music industry. Both Meta and UMG have committed to collaborating on tackling these issues to ensure that artists and songwriters receive fair compensation for their work.

Tamara Hrivnak, Meta’s VP of Music and Content Business Development, highlighted the role of music in connecting people across Meta’s apps, while Michael Nash, UMG’s Chief Digital Officer, stressed the importance of protecting artistic rights and addressing challenges posed by AI technologies.

This enhanced collaboration follows recent disputes between UMG and other platforms, including a temporary removal of UMG’s music from TikTok earlier this year, which was resolved in May. The partnership also aligns with legal actions by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), representing UMG, against AI music startups accused of using copyrighted material without authorization.

By including WhatsApp and Threads in the licensing deal, Meta and UMG aim to provide new opportunities for artists and songwriters to engage with fans and monetize their work across a wider array of platforms within Meta’s ecosystem.
